Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara National Park, while smaller and less renowned than Tanzania’s larger parks, offers a distinct safari experience, especially for bird enthusiasts. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, and a significant bird population around the lake, but its famous tree-climbing lions are now rarely seen. While the scenery is beautiful, many travelers find that nearby parks like Tarangire, which boasts larger wildlife concentrations and similar landscapes, may offer a more rewarding game-viewing experience.

Wildlife in Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park, though small, offers diverse habitats supporting rich wildlife, providing a focused safari experience, though it lacks the full "Big Five" seen in larger parks.
Elephants
Lake Manyara hosts 600-800 elephants, with frequent sightings due to its small size. Tarangire has herds of up to 300 but more spread out, while Kruger’s 13,000 elephants are dispersed over its vast 19,485 sq. km area.
Lions
Lake Manyara’s lions are known for tree-climbing, though less frequent now. Serengeti’s 3,000 lions focus on hunting during the Great Migration, and Masai Mara’s lions are famed for hunting, while Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda also features tree-climbing lions.
Birdlife
Lake Manyara, home to over 400 bird species, offers concentrated birdwatching, especially during the wet season. Tarangire has 550 species, and Kruger over 500, but Lake Manyara’s smaller size makes sightings easier.
Hippos and Aquatic Life
Lake Manyara’s Hippo Pool provides concentrated hippo sightings near the lake. Serengeti, Masai Mara, and Kruger also have hippos, but sightings are more spread out in larger parks.

Environmental Challenges and Latest Updates (2023)
In recent years, Lake Manyara has faced environmental challenges, notably flooding and pollution from agricultural runoff. These issues have impacted the lake’s ecosystems, leading to changes in wildlife behavior and availability.
Flooding
Sediment and pollution from nearby farms have altered the lake’s water levels, leading to annual flooding. Roads to key areas like the hippo pools have become inaccessible at times, particularly during the rainy season.

Decline in Flamingo Populations
The fluctuating water levels and pollution have affected the algae in the lake, a critical food source for flamingos. As a result, many flamingos now migrate to Lake Natron during the dry season, reducing the spectacular flocks that the park was once famous for.

Best time to visit Lake Manyara
Each season offers a unique experience in Lake Manyara, with its own set of wildlife highlights and challenges. The dry season (June to October) is ideal for large mammal sightings and ease of travel, while the wet season (November to May) is perfect for birdwatchers and those seeking lush, green landscapes.
June to October (Dry Season)
The dry season is considered the best time for wildlife viewing in Lake Manyara National Park. During these months, the landscape becomes drier, and animals like elephants, lions, buffalo, and giraffes are easier to spot as they congregate around the lake and remaining water sources. The thinner vegetation provides greater visibility, and the roads are dry and easily navigable, making game drives more comfortable. Temperatures are pleasant during the day, averaging around 25-30°C (77-86°F), though nights can be cooler.
🦁
Wildlife Highlights
Elephants: High concentrations are visible around water sources as they gather in large herds. Tree-Climbing Lions: Although sightings are less frequent than in past years, the lions are still occasionally seen resting in acacia trees to avoid the heat. Waterbirds: While the flamingo population is smaller during the dry season, you can still see pelicans, storks, and other waterbirds.
✨
Ideal For
Visitors focused on spotting large mammals, especially during game drives. Photographers benefit from clear weather and optimal lighting during this season.
November to February (Wet Season - Migratory Bird Peak)
This period marks the arrival of the short rains, bringing lush, green landscapes and a surge in bird activity. While animals are more spread out due to the abundance of water, the wet season is the best time for birdwatchers. The lake attracts migratory birds, including flamingos and Eurasian species, and birdwatchers can spot up to 100 bird species in a single day. The scenery is stunning, with green landscapes and dramatic skies that make for excellent photography.
🦁
Wildlife Highlights
Migratory Birds: Species like the Eurasian roller, lesser flamingos, and pink-backed pelicans arrive in large numbers. Elephants: Still easy to spot, though they tend to spread across the park due to increased water availability. Breeding Birds: Many species, including waterbirds and raptors, enter their breeding season, making it a fascinating time to observe unique bird behaviors .
✨
Ideal For
Birdwatchers and photographers seeking lush, vibrant landscapes and a variety of bird species in breeding plumage.
March to May (Wet Season - Long Rains)
March through May is the peak of the wet season, often referred to as the “long rains.” While this period brings the park’s most lush and green landscapes, it also comes with challenges. Roads can become muddy and difficult to navigate, and certain parts of the park may experience flooding, limiting accessibility. However, this time remains ideal for dedicated birdwatchers and those looking for dramatic, rain-enhanced scenery.
🦁
Wildlife Highlights
Migratory and Breeding Birds: The park remains a top destination for birdwatchers, with migratory species still present until April. Resident birds are also in their breeding season. Lush Scenery: The verdant landscapes make this a great time for photographers wanting to capture the park in its most vibrant state. Wildlife Dispersal: Mammals like elephants, buffaloes, and giraffes are more spread out, making game viewing less predictable than in the dry season
✨
Ideal For
Visitors with a strong interest in birdwatching and those who prefer quieter, less crowded safaris. Be prepared for potential weather-related challenges like muddy roads and occasional flooding.

Climate, Insects, and Traveler Considerations
The park’s tropical climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons, creates different environmental conditions throughout the year. Here’s what you need to know about the weather, insect activity, and how to prepare for a comfortable safari experience.
Temperatures
Lake Manyara experiences relatively mild to warm temperatures throughout the year, due to its location at the base of the Great Rift Valley. Daytime temperatures typically range between 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), with slightly cooler nights and early mornings, especially during the dry season from June to October. Temperatures can drop to around 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F) at night, so travelers should bring layers for early morning game drives.
June to October (Dry Season): Daytime temperatures are warm, averaging around 27°C (81°F), but nights can be cooler.
November to May (Wet Season): Daytime temperatures remain similar but can feel more humid due to increased rainfall.

Mosquitoes and Malaria
Lake Manyara lies in a region where malaria is present, especially during the wet season when standing water provides ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are more active at night and around dusk, so it’s important to take precautions, especially if traveling during the rainy season.
Prevention Tips:
Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.
Sleep under mosquito nets if available.
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants during the evening.
Consider taking malaria prophylaxis, especially if traveling during the wet season.
Tsetse Flies
Tsetse flies are present in Lake Manyara National Park, though their occurrence is more concentrated in the woodland areas. These biting flies are most active during the day and are attracted to dark, moving objects. While cases of sleeping sickness are extremely rare among tourists, tsetse fly bites can be painful and irritating.
Prevention Tips:
Wear light-colored clothing, as tsetse flies are attracted to dark colors.
Avoid wearing blue and black clothing, as these colors attract tsetse flies.
Apply insect repellent, although it’s worth noting that tsetse flies can be less responsive to typical repellents like DEET.
Other Insects
Besides mosquitoes and tsetse flies, other biting insects like midges and ticks may also be present, particularly in wetter and more vegetated areas. Ticks, though generally not a significant problem in Lake Manyara, can sometimes be found in more grassy regions. Travelers are advised to do regular tick checks after walking through bushy areas, especially if on a walking safari or nature trek.
General Tips:
Wearing long sleeves and trousers helps reduce exposure to biting insects.
Check yourself for ticks after walking through dense vegetation.
Use insect repellent and avoid perfumes or fragranced lotions that may attract insects.
