🌍 Tanzania

📍 Karatu

Tloma Lodge is one of Karatu’s classic mid-range options, where rooms generally fall between $260–280 per night in high season. In low season (March–May), discounts of about 40% typically reduce rates to ~$155–170 per night. The lodge is set on the edge of a coffee plantation, with views across the valley and gardens that give it a more “plantation retreat” feel compared with other Karatu bases.

From a safari perspective, Tloma offers the same trade-off as Marera: you’ll need about 25–30 minutes to reach the Ngorongoro gate, which means descending into the crater around 7:30 am if you leave at dawn. That’s good timing, but still later than crater-rim lodges like Ngorongoro Serena, where guests can be on the floor by 6:30 am. Compared with Marera Valley Lodge (similar pricing, more rustic-chic), Tloma feels greener and more landscaped. Against Farm of Dreams (bigger and slightly cheaper), Tloma is smaller and more intimate, with a stronger plantation character.

For travelers who appreciate gardens, birdlife, and a quiet plantation backdrop without breaking into luxury pricing like Kitela Lodge (~$375–400), Tloma is an attractive choice.

Meals

  • Emphasis on farm-to-table: much of the produce comes from Tloma’s own gardens.
