Mahale Mountains
Our journey begins with a flight from Dar es Salaam or Arusha to the remote Mahale Mountains, a true gem on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Landing here feels like stepping into another world, where dense forests meet the pristine waters of one of Africa’s Great Lakes. After settling into our lodge and enjoying lunch, we’ll have the chance to take in the beautiful surroundings and perhaps enjoy a dip in the crystal-clear lake. Mahale is home to some of the world’s last wild chimpanzees, and tomorrow, we’ll set out in search of them. For now, though, enjoy the serenity of this remarkable location as the sun sets over the water.

Today is dedicated to the incredible experience of chimpanzee trekking. After an early breakfast, we set out with our guide, entering the lush forests of Mahale to track these intelligent primates. The trek itself is part of the adventure, winding through dense foliage, with glimpses of birds and smaller wildlife along the way. When we find the chimpanzees, it’s a profound moment—watching them interact, play, and go about their day. You’ll see family bonds and social behavior up close, an experience that stays with you long after you leave. After spending time with the chimps, we’ll return to the lodge for lunch, with the afternoon free for a relaxing swim in the lake or a sunset boat ride.
