8-Day Bushland to Moorland — Laikipia & Mount Kenya Walking

8 days·7 nights

Eight days, two entirely different worlds, and every step of it on foot. This is Karisia's most ambitious walking hybrid: four days of camel-supported safari across the eastern Laikipia Plateau — acacia thornbush, sandy luggas, elephant herds at the Ewaso Nyiro River — followed by three days walking Mount Kenya's moorland zone above 3,200 metres, where giant groundsels stand sentinel at the tarns and the air has the bite of altitude. Neither phase resembles the other in landscape, temperature, or ecology. Together they make the most complete on-foot exploration of north-central Kenya that any single itinerary offers.

8-Day Masai Mara Conservancy Deep-Dive Safari

8-Day Masai Mara Conservancy Deep-Dive Safari

8 days·7 nights
Route  NairobiMasai Mara National ReserveNairobi

Seven nights in a private Mara conservancy — the longest single-destination immersion in the Mara ecosystem available to independent travellers — delivering the full conservancy programme that shorter stays can only sketch out. Fly in from Wilson Airport and spend every day in terrain where the vehicle leaves the track the moment an animal is sighted: predator tracking at dawn, guided walks among lion country, night drives into the darkness the main reserve cannot offer, and photography sessions in a light and landscape that have made this corner of Africa the most photographed wildlife ecosystem on Earth. This is the Mara without a checkout date pressing on every game drive.

9-Day Masai Mara Grand Conservancy Circuit

9-Day Masai Mara Grand Conservancy Circuit

9 days·8 nights
Route  NairobiMasai Mara National ReserveNairobi

Eight nights across three Mara conservancies — Naboisho's acacia-dense woodland, Olare Motorogi's open-plains predator corridors, and Mara North's Mara River escarpment country — connected by short bush flights that trade one landscape for another without a day lost to road transit. This is the longest Mara product in the pilot, built on a simple argument: no single conservancy tells the full story of the ecosystem, and three nights in each is the minimum required to stop being a visitor and start being a resident. Night drives, walking safaris, and off-road access across all three, with no vehicle-density compromise at any sighting.

9-Day Masai Mara & Diani Beach — Bush and Beach Safari

9 days·8 nights
Route  NairobiMasai Mara National ReserveDiani BeachMombasa

Two Kenyas in one itinerary: four nights inside a private Mara conservancy — night drives, walking safaris, lion prides tracked across open grassland with no other vehicles in sight — then a direct bush flight to Mombasa that swaps the savannah for Diani Beach's ten kilometres of white coral sand and Indian Ocean reef. No backtracking through Nairobi. No wasted transfer day. The split is the design — 4N bush, 4N beach — and the direct Mara-to-Mombasa connection via Mombasa Air Safari is what makes it possible to hold both halves at full length rather than compressing one to accommodate the other.

9-Day Chyulu Hills Grand Safari — ol Donyo Lodge Extended Stay

9-Day Chyulu Hills Grand Safari — ol Donyo Lodge Extended Stay

9 days·8 nights
Route  NairobiChyulu HillsNairobi

The longest single-lodge Chyulu Hills programme available — eight nights at ol Donyo Lodge on the 275,000-acre Mbirikani Group Ranch, long enough to ride out on horseback across three different circuits, track Kilimanjaro's summit light from multiple vantages at different hours, and develop a genuine working relationship with the waterhole hide's resident elephant families and lion prides. This is not a safari that visits the Chyulu Hills. It is a nine-day residency in one of the most distinctive wildlife landscapes in southern Kenya, where Maasai-conserved ranchland connects the Tsavo and Amboseli ecosystems, big-tusker bulls move through on predictable dry-season schedules, and Africa's highest mountain provides the backdrop for every dawn and dusk that the stay produces.

10-Day Chyulu Hills & Masai Mara — Great Plains Ultimate Kenya Circuit

10-Day Chyulu Hills & Masai Mara — Great Plains Ultimate Kenya Circuit

10 days·9 nights
Route  NairobiChyulu HillsMasai Mara National ReserveNairobi

Two ecosystems, ten days, and nothing left unfinished. The Chyulu Hills' volcanic ridge and the Masai Mara's private conservancies are the most complementary pairing in Kenya's safari landscape — one defined by silence, horseback, and a mountain on the horizon; the other by the highest concentration of big cats on the continent. Four nights on Mbirikani Group Ranch at ol Donyo Lodge covers the full horseback programme, the waterhole hide system, and the star beds that point toward Kilimanjaro. Five nights in the Mara conservancies — Olare Motorogi, Mara North, or Naboisho — deliver the night drives, walking safaris, and off-road access that the national reserve cannot offer. A single bush flight connects the two. The rest is uninterrupted wilderness.

10-Day Mara & Serengeti Premium Fly-In

10-Day Mara & Serengeti Premium Fly-In

10 days·9 nights

Four nights in a Masai Mara private conservancy — exclusive off-road territory, night drives, guided walks, the density of predators that the main reserve's fences cannot contain — followed by a direct bush flight south across the Kenya–Tanzania border to the Serengeti's vast interior. No Nairobi stopover. No road transfers. No shared airspace with the overland circuits. This is the premium version of the cross-border circuit: deeper into each ecosystem, more time at each, and a flight path that makes the border crossing feel like a natural pivot rather than a logistical interruption. On the Kenya side, the conservancy system gives you what the main reserve cannot — vehicles that follow predators across open ground, night drives tracking leopard in the dark, walking safaris with armed guides in lion country, bush lunches on the open plain without another vehicle in sight. On the Tanzania side, the Serengeti's scale reveals itself without the compression of a two-night visit: four days to read the kopje landscape, to learn which pride uses which granite outcrop at dawn, to understand why the Serengeti Lion Project has been running continuously in this territory since 1966. The migration calendar determines the Serengeti zone. July through October: the northern Kogatende area, where the crossing herds pour south from the Mara into Tanzania and the Mara River works from both sides. November through June: Central Seronera, where the resident predators perform on the most studied savannah on Earth. Either way, the bush flight from the Mara to the Serengeti is the most dramatic route change in East African safari — the moment when you understand that the animals in front of you are part of a system that crosses the political line you just flew over.

10-Day Samburu, Lewa & Masai Mara — Epic Wilderness Safari

10 days·9 nights

Three of Kenya's most celebrated wilderness zones in a single ten-day arc: Samburu National Reserve for the Special Five along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy for the highest black rhino density in Kenya against a Mount Kenya backdrop, and the Mara North Conservancy for exclusive big cat territory where night drives and walking safaris are available every evening. All transfers are by bush flight — no long road days, no wasted mornings, each destination fully inhabited.

10-Day Laikipia & Masai Mara Conservancy Circuit — Premium Fly-In Safari

10-Day Laikipia & Masai Mara Conservancy Circuit — Premium Fly-In Safari

10 days·9 nights

Ten days, two of Kenya's most exclusive private conservancies, and a blueprint for what a premium fly-in circuit looks like when it commits time rather than rationing it: four nights in Laikipia's high-altitude wilderness — horseback riding among Lewa's rhinos, mountain biking through Borana's acacia country, night drives tracking leopard and wild dog across the plateau — then a bush flight south to five nights in the Mara conservancies of Naboisho or Olare-Motorogi, where off-road access, night drives, and walking safaris put you alongside predators in a grassland that holds the highest lion density in Africa. Mount Kenya as a permanent backdrop in the north. The Mara plains stretching to Tanzania in the south. This is Kenya's twin-conservancy masterpiece.

10-Day Pure Kenya — Chyulu Hills, Masai Mara & Samburu

10 days·9 nights

Ten days, three entirely different Kenyas. In the south, a volcanic ridge between Tsavo and Amboseli — Kilimanjaro filling the horizon at 35 miles, horseback across a 275,000-acre Maasai ranch, a sunken waterhole hide where lion visit before dawn. Then the Masai Mara conservancies: night game drives, walking safaris, and the world's highest big cat density with zero vehicle limits per sighting. Finally, the Northern Frontier — the semi-arid riverine world along the Ewaso Ng'iro where five species found nowhere else in Kenya define every game drive. Three bush flights make it possible. No Nairobi rest night. Every night at the ecosystem itself.

11-Day Mara & Serengeti Grand Fly-In

11-Day Mara & Serengeti Grand Fly-In

11 days·10 nights

Five nights inside a Masai Mara private conservancy, a bush flight across the Kenya–Tanzania border, three nights in central Serengeti at Seronera, and two nights in the far north at Kogatende — eleven days to see both sides of the migration circuit with enough time in each place for the game driving to become genuinely deliberate. The Mara and the Serengeti are one continuous ecosystem divided by a straight-line border. This itinerary is built on the premise that understanding both requires staying in each long enough to move past the highlights reel. The extra night that distinguishes this journey from its ten-day sibling goes to north Serengeti's Kogatende area, putting guests on the Tanzanian bank of the Mara River during the same season the Kenyan bank delivers crossings — two perspectives on the same herd, fifteen kilometres apart, connected by a wildlife corridor that cares nothing for the boundary between them.

11-Day Classic Kenya Six-Park Safari — Aberdare, Samburu, Nakuru, Naivasha & Masai Mara

11-Day Classic Kenya Six-Park Safari — Aberdare, Samburu, Nakuru, Naivasha & Masai Mara

11 days·10 nights

The most comprehensive single-country Kenya circuit available by road: six distinct parks and reserves across eleven days, with The Ark's nocturnal waterhole theatre in the Aberdares, two full days pursuing Samburu's Special Five along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, and three nights in the Masai Mara for big cats, river crossings, and bird-rich grassland. Amboseli's tusker herds below Kilimanjaro on Day 1 set the register — and the Mara closes it with the largest lion population in Africa.

Kenya's safari circuit centres on the Masai Mara national reserve — note: a national reserve, not a national park, managed by Narok County rather than Kenya Wildlife Service. That distinction matters: unlike Tanzania's national parks where rules are set by TANAPA, the conservancies that surround the Mara operate under their own agreements with Maasai landowners, and those conservancies unlock experiences unavailable in the main reserve. Nairobi is Africa's best-connected safari gateway, with direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Doha, Mumbai and a dozen other hubs — which makes Kenya the natural choice for travellers without extra days to burn on connections.

The Masai Mara and conservancies#

The Masai Mara national reserve covers approximately 1,510 sq km of open savanna and riverine forest along the Mara River. It holds all of the Big Five and the highest lion density of any reserve in Africa. Reserve fee: $80/adult/day (main reserve). The surrounding private conservancies — Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Mara North — add roughly 200,000 acres of Maasai-leased land. Inside the conservancies, the rules change entirely: off-road driving to follow animals, night drives (7–9 PM), walking safaris, and private bush dinners are all permitted. Vehicle numbers are strictly capped, so encounters unfold without the minivan crowds that can gather at a lion kill inside the main reserve. Conservancy fees run roughly $80–150/person/night, usually included in the camp rate.

From Nairobi, the Mara is 45 minutes by light aircraft from Wilson Airport (not JKIA, which is on the other side of the city), or a 5–6 hour drive via Narok. For anyone spending three or more nights in the Mara, flying in is strongly recommended.

Northern Kenya: Samburu and Laikipia#

Samburu National Reserve is Kenya's most compelling reason to go north. The draw is the Samburu Special Five — five dry-country species found in northern Kenya and nowhere in the south: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and beisa oryx. The Ewaso Ng'iro River bisects the reserve, keeping wildlife visible along its banks all year. Reserve fee: $70/adult/day. Access: 5–6 hours by road from Nairobi via Isiolo, or 1–1.5 hours by bush flight from Wilson Airport.

The Laikipia plateau sits at 5,500–7,000 feet — cool nights, a significantly lower malaria risk than low-lying parks, and a pioneering community conservancy model that has rewarded conservation with some of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya outside the Mara. Laikipia is home to the largest population of black rhino in Kenya, Grevy's zebra, wild dog, and the last two Northern White Rhinos on Earth at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The activity palette here goes well beyond a standard game drive: horseback safaris, camel treks, walking with an armed guide, fly camping, and mountain biking are all available. Drive time from Nairobi is 3.5–4.5 hours to Nanyuki, or 35–60 minutes by bush flight from Wilson.

Amboseli: elephants under Kilimanjaro#

Amboseli National Park (392 sq km) is Kenya's most iconic backdrop: large elephant herds with big-tusked bulls moving across open swamp, with Kilimanjaro filling the horizon behind them. The mountain is most visible early morning before cloud builds by midday, so an early game drive is essential. Park fee: $43/adult/day. Drive time from Nairobi: 4–5 hours via the Namanga road. Bush flight from Wilson: approximately 45 minutes. Amboseli works naturally as a two-night stop on a Kenya circuit, paired with the Mara or extended into Tsavo for a longer journey.

Getting there#

Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is Africa's best-connected aviation hub, with direct services from London, Amsterdam, Paris, Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, and many others. All bush flights depart from Wilson Airport — a separate domestic terminal 6 km southwest of the CBD, about 30 minutes from JKIA in light traffic. Budget a 60–90 minute buffer for Nairobi traffic on any morning departure.

What is the best time to go on a Kenya safari?
June to October is the dry season and the peak window for the Masai Mara, with the Great Migration arriving from Tanzania's Serengeti between July and October. January to February is the short dry season — excellent for Amboseli (clearest Kilimanjaro views) and Laikipia. April and May are the long rains and the main window to avoid; some roads become difficult and a few camps close.
Is Kenya or Tanzania better for a safari?
Kenya for conservancy experiences unavailable in Tanzania's national parks — night drives, off-road driving, walking safaris and horseback. Kenya also has the advantage of Nairobi's superb international connections and the unique northern dry-country species in Samburu. Tanzania for the Great Migration's full annual arc (most of the year is in Tanzania), Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and the uncrowded southern wilderness parks. Both offer the Big Five. Many itineraries combine both.
What is the Samburu Special Five?
Five dry-country species endemic to northern Kenya that are not found in southern Kenya or Tanzania: Grevy's zebra (the world's largest zebra), reticulated giraffe (the most striking pattern of any giraffe), Somali ostrich (blue neck, different from common ostrich), gerenuk (stands on hind legs to browse acacia), and beisa oryx. Seeing all five is the primary reason to include Samburu in a Kenya itinerary.
Do I need a visa for Kenya?
Most nationalities now use the Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system, obtained online at etakenya.go.ke. The eTA is valid for 90 days on arrival and largely replaces the previous on-arrival visa. A small number of nationalities are visa-exempt. Always verify current requirements from official sources before travel.
