A glimpse into an exciting day of safari with us

**The Day the Lion Looked Us in the Eye ** Our lead guide, Matey , has spent 15 years in the African bush but even he says this moment gave him chills. It was dawn in the Maasai Mara. The mist was still lifting when we spotted a lone lioness stalking through the tall grass. Suddenly, she stopped not 10 meters from our vehicle and locked eyes with Matey. For a heartbeat, the entire world went silent. You could hear nothing but the slow rhythm of your own pulse. Then, from behind her, three tiny cubs emerged tumbling playfully, completely unaware that we were there. Matey whispered, “This is the privilege of patience. Nature reveals herself only when you earn her trust.” That morning, no one spoke for several minutes. We didn’t need to. We had just witnessed the wild heart of Africa raw, unfiltered, unforgettable.

What are your favourite Kilimanjaro routes, campsites, or acclimatization strategies — and why?

Favourite Kilimanjaro Routes#

1. Lemosho Route (7–8 Days)

Why it’s a favourite:

  • Best combination of scenic beauty, gradual acclimatization, and summit success rate.

  • Approaches the mountain from the western side — quieter for the first two days and joins the Machame Route near Shira Plateau.

  • Excellent variation in terrain: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacier views. Highlights for clients:

  • Panoramic vistas on Shira Ridge.

  • Chance to acclimatize with “climb high, sleep low” days (especially around Lava Tower).

  • Ideal for first-time trekkers who want a comfortable but challenging experience. Key Campsites:

  • Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree) – First night, lush forest.

  • Shira 1 & Shira 2 Camps – Expansive views across the Shira Plateau.

  • Barranco Camp – Iconic setting beneath the Barranco Wall.

  • Karanga Camp – Crucial acclimatization stop before summit night.

  • Barafu Camp – Base for summit push.

2. Machame Route (6–7 Days)

Why it’s a favourite:

  • The “Whiskey Route” — very scenic and challenging, with strong acclimatization opportunities.

  • Excellent choice for fit clients seeking a classic, social Kilimanjaro climb.

  • Route layout follows “trek high, sleep low” pattern, helping adjust to altitude. Highlights for clients:

  • Trek through all major vegetation zones.

  • The Barranco Wall adds an exciting but non-technical climb.

  • Balanced duration and cost compared to longer routes. Key Campsites:

  • Machame Camp – Start of moorland zone.

  • Shira Cave Camp – Expansive plateau views.

  • Barranco Camp – One of the most photographed spots on Kili.

  • Karanga Camp – Great acclimatization stop.

  • Barafu Camp – Staging point for Uhuru Peak ascent.

3. Northern Circuit Route (9 Days)

Why it’s a favourite:

  • Longest route on Kilimanjaro — best acclimatization and least crowded.

  • Circumnavigates the northern slopes for panoramic views of Kenya and the plains below.

  • Highest summit success rate of any route (over 90%). Highlights for clients:

  • Ideal for serious trekkers who want a quiet, remote experience.

  • Time and route structure allow excellent adaptation to altitude.

  • Visits some of Kili’s less-travelled camps, providing solitude and exclusivity. Key Campsites:

  • Shira 1 & 2 Camps

  • Moir Hut Camp – Good acclimatization day hikes available.

  • Pofu Camp – Beautiful views across northern slopes.

  • Third Cave Camp – Peaceful overnight stop before summit approach.

  • School Hut or Kibo Hut – Final camp before summit.

What moments or parts of the mountain do you still find magical — even after climbing hundreds of times?
  • The stillness just before dawn on the ridge.

  • The crunch of fresh snow underfoot after a storm.

Our favourite spots in Tanzania

Serengeti National Park

  • Moru Kopjes

  • Seronera Plains Tarangire National Park

  • Tarangire Riverbanks

  • Kitibong Hill Lake Manyara National Park

  • Treetop Walkway

  • Rift Valley Viewpoint Ngorongoro Conservation Area

  • Ngorongoro Crater Floor

  • Lerai Forest Arusha National Park

  • Momella Lakes

Real stories about how we support our clients

Situation: While guiding a group during a safari in the northern circuit of Tanzania, one client fell ill with a high fever late in the afternoon, in a remote area near Tarangire National Park. They were unable to continue the game drive. Our Response:

  • We immediately assessed their condition, provided fluids and shaded rest in the vehicle.

  • We contacted our operations base, coordinated with our ground vehicle and local clinic.

  • We adjusted the schedule to bypass further remote driving that day, and arranged for transport back to our lodge safely.

  • The rest of the group was offered a shorter, but scenic, game drive to still enjoy the day without feeling their itinerary was fully disrupted.

  • The patient was monitored overnight by our safari nurse‑guide and we liaised with the lodge’s medical facility. By the next morning the client’s fever had started to diminish, and with our guide’s clearance they re‑joined the group for the next morning’s activity. Outcome & Take‑away: The client recovered and expressed gratitude for the swift, calm support. The group remained satisfied with the experience because we remained transparent, flexible, and proactive. The team’s ability to adjust logistics on the fly while maintaining safety and comfort made a meaningful difference.

Unforgettable safari experience.

I just finished a three-day camping safari with Matey from Gardenia African Safaris. Our first stop was Tarangire National Park, whose landscape immediately captivated us. Giant baobab trees shaped the park's image, and herds of elephants roamed the savannah leisurely. Ngorongoro Crater offered authentic impressions. It was unbelievable how many wildlife live together in a confined space. On the last day we explored Lake Manyara National Park. The landscape changed again: more forest, and the entire park exuded a tranquil atmosphere, very different from the open plains we had seen before. Many thanks to Matey for the excellent organization! The guide was competent, the camping was comfortable, and the entire trip was safe, smooth and full of unforgettable moments.

Wonderful experience in Tanzania.

Our 5-day luxury safari covering Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater was extremely well organized. From pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the transition to Arusha lodge was seamless. And everything was perfectly organized by Gardenia African Safaris. Our driver guide Matey was fantastic knowledgeable. He made our journey safe and memorable. The drive to Serengeti was beautiful scenery, and once inside the park, the wildlife sightings began almost immediately. We saw elephants, giraffes, and multiple lion groups within the first afternoon. Having a full day in Serengeti allowed us to explore different habitats and see a wider variety of animals. Ngorongoro Crater felt compact but intense. Wildlife viewing was excellent, and the landscape itself is impressive. Very enjoyable safari experience.

3 days was beautifully planned and very affordable.

Our 3-day budget safari in Tanzania with Gardenia African Safaris was fantastic, and Tanzania gave our family a new appreciation for the natural world. We arrived in Arusha full of excitement, and our expedition began in Tarangire National Park. The vast plains, towering baobab trees, and huge herds of elephants left us in awe. Spending the night at Migombani Campsite in Moto wa Mbu was peaceful and pleasant, with fresh air, local food, and the sounds of nature all around us. The next day, we explored the famous Ngorongoro Crater. We returned to Arusha feeling grateful and inspired. This safari reminded us of how beautiful and powerful nature really is. Lovely safari experience, we would recommend Gardenia teams.

The fifth day was emotional, grounding and healing in a strange way. We enjoyed every game drive in

A safari in Tanzania had been planned for a long time and undoubtedly began with an extraordinary trip with our four cousins. This trip became one of the most formative experiences of my life in Tanzania, organized by the professional tour operator Gardenia African Safaris. Ndutu fascinated us with its endless herds of animals, the Serengeti shocked us with the predator activity, and the Ngorongoro Crater impressed us with its incredible biodiversity. One moment we were still laughing in the car, the next we were whispering as a leopard rested in a tree just a few feet away. Our driver and guide Baraka had an incredible sense of the animals’ behaviour and the landscape, making each sighting feel like a conscious experience. We appreciated the successful mix of education, adventure, laughter and reflection that united in this journey. We returned home with a deeper respect for Tanzania's wildlife and a renewed sense of wonder.

We explored Tanzania's largest wildlife in depth.

Gardenia African Safaris was our organizer and the team planned our 8 days wonderfully. Traveling in a group made the safari collaborative. Our guide was brilliant, always created fun moments and explained wildlife behaviors perfectly. We compared our experiences after each safari, discussing behaviors and landscape differences. The Tarangire National Park impressed us with its elephant density and unique vegetation. The Ndutu region surprised us with its wild and open nature. We observed many species of animals from a distance and the lack of dense vegetation made every movement visible. In the Serengeti National Park, the Manyara Lake National Park ended the journey with a greener environment and a strong presence of birdlife. Overall, the safari was instructive, more than just adventurous. We felt very safe and enjoyed every exciting safari. An authentic safari with a very professional team.

Expectional Tanzanian wildlife safari experience.

Our safari experience in Tarangire and Ngorongoro was very exciting journey with Gardenia African Safaris. Matey was a fantastic planner, everything was perfectly organized and made our journey safe and memorable. From the first game drive, we were surrounded by wildlife – elephants roaming freely, zebras grazing peacefully and lions resting in the golden grass. The baobab trees of Tarangire created such a dramatic backdrop that every photo looked like a postcard. The Ngorongoro Crater was truly awe-inspiring, like stepping into a natural paradise teeming with life. The diversity of animals in such a small area was amazing. Our guide was friendly, informative and always knew where to find the action without intruding. Our deeper appreciation for the Tanzanian's natural world. Lovely trip.

Real wildlife adventure experience in Tanzania full of excitement.

Our 7-day safari adventure experience in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti with Matey. Honestly Matey was perfectly organized for our vacation. Every game drive was very safe and thrilling. Seeing so many animals coexisting together made it seem like it was a perfectly balanced ecosystem. Our every moment was exciting. Each day felt different, not repetitive. Best wildlife safari experience. We will highly recommend Gardenia African Safaris.

Best memories in our life.

Our January journey with Gardenia African Safaris and our exploring at Serengeti and Ndutu was slow, spacious, and deeply absorbing. Over 3 days, we watched the land wake up, the herds move, and calves struggle, fall, and rise again. There was a sense of peace in just observing – not chasing the scene, not rushing, just letting nature unfold in its own time. With its open plains and quiet surroundings, Ndutu felt particularly ungrounded. My friends and I were able to talk less and observe more – the wind, the light, the distant movements of animals. Thank you Gardenia teams and thanks Matey for making our safari memorable.

We booked Gardenia African Safaris for 4 days safari with our full of excitement. We visited Tanzanian 3 national park and each park completely different moods. Each day unfolded with surprise and wonder, making us feel like explorers rather than tourists. There was a deep connection between being surrounded by untouched landscapes and ancient rhythms. We were listening to ourselves more, talking less, and appreciating everything, seeing so many animals around us up close for the first time. Every game drive was thrilling and memorable, A big thanks to Matey honestly everything he was planned very well and very helpful.

Our 5 day Tanzanian safari experience with Matey. It was the best safari experience experience in the perfect natural beautys country Tanzania. Matey was fantastic drive guide, he gave us thrilling, safe and memorable every game drive. We explored Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Crater. Tarangire's raw beauty- elephants roaming freely beneath ancient baobabs, dust glowing in afternoon light. Lake Manyara whispered serenity - green forests, mirrored waters, and birds painting the sky. Ngorongoro Crater was the final revelation, mind blowing landscapes overflowing with life, movement, and harmony. We returned with stillness, wonder, and a lasting connection to the wild heart of Tanzania. We would like to recommend Matey and Gardenia African Safaris team management.

Peaceful family safari experience in Tanzania.

Experiencing this 5 day safari with Gardenia African Safaris was fantastic and memorable. Over our 6 unforgettable days, we explored Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro revealed themselves not only through wildlife but through the rhythm of the road. Every game drive was filled with anticipation, discovery, and conversation, largely thanks to Hassan. His calm driving, sharp instincts, and genuine passion for the land transformed our safari into something deeply personal. Tarangire introduced us to elephant giants, Serengeti gave us the thrill of wide-open savannah and predator sightings. Ngorongoro felt like nature's own amphitheater, a veritable paradise of natural beauty. Thank you to the Gardenia African team for managing our safari perfectly from start to finish.

Our guide Baraka was a very talented driver and guide. His friendly nature made our trip pleasant and uncomplicated. Every morning began with excitement, and every evening ended with stories we could hardly believe. Lions crawling in the golden light, elephants crossing dusty streets, and giraffes gliding through acacia trees – simply overwhelming! We are incredibly grateful for this experience and the opportunity to experience people and nature so closely. Tanzania was truly peaceful and beautiful, the world is just fantastic. Our guides, Mutibo and Alex, won our hearts with their involvement in having an exceptional experience, sharing personal knowledge and experiences.
