The northern circuit is where most first safaris begin, and for good reason. Tarangire National Park draws the largest elephant herds in Tanzania, particularly from June through October when animals converge on the Tarangire River. Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers something unique anywhere in Africa: a self-contained volcanic crater holding around 25,000 animals year-round, including one of the continent's last black rhino populations. A crater descent is one of the most reliable Big Five game-viewing experiences you can plan.
How the itineraries are structured#
First-timer itineraries on this page run from two days to seven. Shorter trips focus on one or two parks — Tarangire and Ngorongoro are the most popular pairing. Longer itineraries extend into the Serengeti, where three or four nights give you real time in the park rather than a rushed drive-through. The northern circuit route connecting all four main parks is the blueprint most classic safaris follow.
All itineraries are vehicle-based game drives — a solid grounding before exploring more specialised formats. If you're travelling with children, the same northern circuit parks are also well-suited — see the family safari selection for age-appropriate pacing.
