Company History - Who founded it, and why?

Tanzania Footmark Safari Ltd was founded in 2019 by Aidan Lucas, a passionate Tanzanian safari guide and operations with years of experience leading travelers through some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes. After guiding hundreds of safaris and mountain climbs, Aidan saw the need for a company that would go beyond logistics one that would create personal, meaningful, and responsible travel experiences.

Driven by a deep love for Tanzania’s people, wildlife, and natural beauty, he founded Tanzania Footmark Safari Ltd with one goal in mind, to leave lasting impressions on both travelers and the land.

The name “Footmark” reflects not only the physical footprints we leave behind, but also the emotional and cultural footprints that responsible travel can create when done with care, respect, and authenticity.

Since then, Tanzania Footmark Safari Ltd has grown into a trusted, locally owned company offering expertly guided safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs, and cultural experiences across the country always with a personal touch and a deep commitment to sustainability.

Today, Aidan’s original vision continues to guide everything we do, creating journeys that leave a lasting mark in the hearts of our guests, and in the future of Tanzania.

Tanzania Footmark Safaris Ltd is a company that believes that business is about building relationships – this we consider to be one of our biggest strengths. We understand the value of repeat business and endeavor to send every customer “happy”… This is our commitment.

A glimpse into an exciting day of safari with us

Every day on safari with us is an adventure shaped by nature, guided by experience, and filled with unforgettable moments. Here’s what a typical (and extraordinary) day might look like:

** Early Morning: Sunrise & First Game Drive** We begin just before dawn, when the bush is cool, quiet, and alive with activity. With coffee or tea in hand, we set out for our first game drive as the sun rises over the savannah. This is the best time to catch predators on the move lions returning from the hunt, leopards slipping into the shadows, or elephants starting their day. The light is magical, and the wildlife sightings are often spectacular.

Mid-Morning: Bush Breakfast or Lodge Retreat After a few hours of exploration, we pause for a hearty bush breakfast in a scenic spot or return to camp for a freshly prepared meal. It’s a chance to relax, share stories, and soak in the beauty around you.

Midday: Rest & Recharge As the animals rest during the heat of the day, so do we. Back at your lodge or tented camp, enjoy downtime perhaps a nap, a swim, or simply a quiet moment on your veranda watching giraffes pass in the distance. The camps we work with are carefully chosen to make even your downtime feel like part of the adventure.

Late Afternoon: Second Game Drive In the cooler afternoon hours, we head back out. This time, we may follow a lion pride lazing in the grass, watch hippos wallow in the river, or witness a dramatic elephant crossing. Every drive is different and that’s the beauty of it.

Sunset: Golden Hour in the Wild As the sun begins to set, we find a peaceful spot for a traditional safari sundowner. With a drink in hand and the sky painted in pinks and golds, it’s a moment of pure magic the kind that stays with you long after your journey ends.

Evening: Campfire, Dinner & Stories Under the Stars Back at camp, the evening unfolds with a delicious dinner and time around the fire. Our guides, with deep local knowledge, are always happy to share stories, answer questions, and help you understand the landscapes and wildlife you’ve encountered.

Our favourite safari lodges and tented camps

We carefully select the safari lodges and tented camps we work with to ensure our guests experience the perfect blend of comfort, location, and authentic wilderness charm. These are some of our all-time favorites each one chosen for its unique character, excellent service, and connection to Tanzania’s incredible landscapes.

1. Serengeti Heritage Tented Camps

Located in key wildlife corridors of the Serengeti, Heritage Camps offer a classic safari experience with warm hospitality and ideal proximity to the Great Migration. The camps are well positioned, comfortable, and strike the perfect balance between traditional bush style and modern convenience.

2. Acacia Tented Camps

With several locations across the Serengeti, Acacia Camps are known for their elegance, personalized service, and stunning views. Whether you’re tracking wildlife in Central or Northern Serengeti, these camps provide comfort, great cuisine, and front-row access to the action.

3. Sound of Nature Tented Camp

Nestled in a quiet corner of the Serengeti, Sound of Nature offers an intimate, eco-friendly setting that feels completely immersed in the wild. It’s ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful, off the beaten path experience without sacrificing quality and service.

4. Sound of Silence Tented Camp

Set in the central Serengeti, this thoughtfully designed camp lives up to its name tranquil, stylish, and wonderfully isolated. With spacious tents, attentive staff, and a focus on sustainability, it’s a perfect blend of serenity and sophistication.

5. Rhino Lodge – Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Simple, cozy, and perfectly located just minutes from the crater rim, Rhino Lodge is a great base for early morning game drives into Ngorongoro Crater. Its rustic charm, warm fireplace lounges, and forest surroundings create a welcoming and authentic highland atmosphere.

6. Robin Tented Camp

Set just outside the Ngorongoro gate, Robin Tented Camp is one of our favorite stopovers between safaris. It offers a peaceful, natural setting, excellent service, and a chance to unwind in comfort after a day of adventure. Its warm hospitality and attention to detail make it feel like a true hidden gem.

Each of these camps and lodges brings something special to the safari experience whether it’s prime wildlife location, a strong eco-conscious ethos, or simply exceptional service that makes guests feel at home. These are the places we trust and return to, time and again, because they consistently deliver unforgettable stays.

What are your favourite Kilimanjaro routes, campsites, or acclimatization strategies — and why?

After many climbs and countless successful summits, we’ve developed a deep appreciation for certain Kilimanjaro routes, campsites, and acclimatization techniques that consistently lead to safer, more enjoyable climbs.

Favorite Routes

  1. Lemosho Route Lemosho is our top choice for most climbers. It offers a perfect balance: beautiful scenery, lower traffic, and a longer itinerary that supports better acclimatization. The western approach through the rainforest and Shira Plateau feels remote and peaceful, and the route joins up with the Machame trail later on, giving climbers a chance to experience the best of both.

  2. Northern Circuit For experienced trekkers looking for a quieter, more remote experience, the Northern Circuit is unbeatable. It’s the longest route on Kilimanjaro, which means the best acclimatization profile and fewer crowds. The views are incredible, and the additional days increase summit success rates significantly.

  3. Machame Route Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is a great option for fit climbers. It’s more challenging than Marangu but also more scenic, with a dramatic ascent through different ecosystems. The climb high, sleep low profile makes it good for acclimatization, especially when taken over 7 days.

Favorite Campsites

  1. Shira 2 Camp With wide-open views of the Shira Plateau and Mount Meru in the distance, this camp feels truly majestic. It’s also a key spot for rest and acclimatization on western routes.

  2. Barranco Camp Famous for the view of the Barranco Wall and the Southern Icefields, this campsite is always a favorite. The climb up the Barranco Wall the next morning is a fun and confidence-building challenge.

  3. Kosovo Camp (on Lemosho/Machame) A higher alternative to Barafu Camp used for summit night, Kosovo is quieter, cleaner, and allows for a slightly shorter summit push. It’s ideal for climbers who want a bit of extra rest and better positioning.

Best Acclimatization Strategies   1.  “Climb High, Sleep Low” We always follow this golden rule whenever the route allows. Taking detours or short hikes to higher elevations before returning to sleep lower greatly improves acclimatization.   2.  Extra Acclimatization Days Adding an extra day especially around the Shira or Karanga camps makes a huge difference in how well climbers adjust. We recommend at least a 7- or 8-day itinerary whenever possible.   3.  Hydration and Pacing We emphasize drinking plenty of water, eating well, and maintaining a slow, steady pace from day one. “Pole pole” (slowly, slowly) isn’t just a saying it’s essential for success.   4.  Nightly Health Checks Monitoring oxygen levels and general well-being each evening allows us to make early decisions and keep climbers safe.

These choices and strategies are based on what we’ve found works best across hundreds of climbs: routes that give the body time to adjust, camps that offer both beauty and strategic advantage, and techniques that increase success and safety. Every climber is different, but preparation and smart planning always lead to a better Kilimanjaro experience.

What moments or parts of the mountain do you still find magical — even after climbing hundreds of times?

Even after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro countless times, there are still moments that feel truly magical every single time.

One of the most unforgettable is the sunrise at Stella Point or Uhuru Peak. No matter how many times I witness it, the first light breaking over the glaciers, painting the clouds and sky in shades of orange and gold, always takes my breath away. It’s a quiet, humbling reminder of how small we are in the face of such vast beauty.

The changing landscapes as you ascend are also something I never stop appreciating. Moving from rainforest to moorland, then alpine desert, and finally the icy summit it feels like walking through different worlds in just a few days. Each zone has its own unique atmosphere and energy.

And of course, the connection with people sharing stories around campfires, seeing the determination in climbers’ eyes, and being part of their journey is something I cherish deeply. Helping someone reach the summit, often after months of preparation, is always rewarding. Their joy becomes mine, every single time..

Our favourite spots in Tanzania

Tanzania is full of incredible places, but a few have truly captured our hearts over the years places we return to again and again for their beauty, wildlife, and quiet magic.

In the Serengeti:   •Ndutu (Southern Serengeti): We love Ndutu during the calving season (Jan–March). It’s where new life begins and predators are incredibly active. The open plains and short grass make it perfect for dramatic wildlife encounters.   •Central Serengeti (Seronera): A year-round favorite. This area is rich in wildlife and gives you the best chance to see big cats in action. We’ve had some of our most unforgettable sightings here cheetahs on the hunt, leopards in the trees.   •Northern Serengeti (Kogatende): During the migration months (July–October), this is where the drama unfolds. River crossings, big herds, and beautiful, rugged landscapes.

In Tarangire:   •Silale Swamp: A hidden gem. During the dry season, this area is teeming with elephants, buffalo, and predators. The contrast of green swamp against dry savannah is stunning and birdlife is amazing here too.   •Baobab-dotted Plains: The landscapes here are iconic. Sunsets through the baobabs are something every traveler should experience at least once.

In Ngorongoro:   •Crater Floor at Dawn: There’s nothing like descending into the Crater in the early morning mist. The light, the quiet, and the density of wildlife make it feel like stepping into another world. •Empakaai Crater: Less visited, but one of our personal favorites for hiking and flamingo sightings. Peaceful and dramatic.

At Lake Eyasi: Cultural visits with the Hadzabe and Datoga: This is where we connect with Tanzania’s human heritage. Visiting the Hadzabe bushmen at dawn is a powerful experience raw, real, and eye-opening. It reminds us that adventure is not only about wildlife, but also about people and perspective.

Real stories about how we support our clients

On a safari in the Serengeti, one of our guests experienced sudden abdominal pain shortly after lunch. Within minutes, our guide trained in wilderness first aid responded with calm and professionalism, ensuring the guest was stable and comfortable.

While monitoring her condition, we immediately activated our emergency response plan. Our team coordinated with camp staff and arranged a medical evacuation within 45 minutes. The guest was safely flown to Arusha, treated by a doctor the same evening, and made a full recovery within 24 hours.

What stood out wasn’t just the quick action it was the care and communication throughout. Her travel companion later shared: “Your team handled everything so smoothly. We felt safe, supported, and never alone even in the middle of the Serengeti.”

We pride ourselves on delivering not only unforgettable adventures, but also unwavering support especially when it matters most.

Professional, resourceful, caring! Thank you Tanzania Footmark Safaris Team

After comparing several local guides, I chose Tanzania Footmark Safaris. It turned out that I made the right choice! The guide Michael is very professional, super enthusiastic, and has excellent English. He shared a lot of interesting things with us. Especially he has rich safari experience. He took us to gather the Big Five of Africa and met a family of lions in Serengeti. The cute little lions are very cute and my son is very happy. Michael cleans the car very well every day. Sometimes we are late for packing, and he waits for us without complaint. After nine days, we became friends. I am willing to recommend him to my friends. The second is my travel consultant Cindy, who made a great itinerary for us! The connection is very good, and the hotel is also very satisfactory!

Tanzania Footmark Safaris is a great option for anyone.

My five-day safari with Tanzania Footmark Safaris was enjoyable, and I got to explore Tarangire National Park and the Ndutu Conservation Area. From start to finish, the trip was carefully organized, and the driver and guide were excellent. They were not only incredibly experienced but also knew a lot about the region and its species. The good cuisine and comfortable lodgings added to the overall enjoyment of the event. My time with the animals, though, was unquestionably the most memorable aspect. Tanzania Footmark Safaris is a great option for anyone looking for a remarkable safari experience.

Visiting Materuni Village was an unforgettable experience.

Visiting Materuni Village was an unforgettable experience! The hike to the waterfall was scenic and not too difficult, and the waterfall itself is absolutely stunning. The best part was the coffee tour — learning how to make coffee the traditional Chagga way was both fun and educational. The locals were incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Moshi area.”

Epic Safari with Thrilling Wildlife Sightings

This safari exceeded all my expectations! As someone in my 20s, I was looking for adventure, and Tanzania Footmark delivered in every way. **Seeing the Big Five, watching a Lioness hunt, and spotting more than 20 different Cheetahs was absolutely mind-blowing!** The number of **Lions, including cubs, prides, and males on kills, was just insane**. One of my favorite moments was spotting a **Leopard with a fresh kill in Tarangire**—a perfect way to wrap up the trip. This safari was an **unreal experience**, and I wouldn’t hesitate to book with Footmark again. If you want a safari that’s both thrilling and seamless, look no further!

Considerate, kind and a good leader of all

Many thanks to Tanzania Footmark Safaris and our outstanding guide Hassan. My wife and I visited several Northern parks with Footmark Safaris and it was an amazing trip. Our first park was Tarangire and we saw herds of elephant, lions, cheetah, leopard and a huge variety of eagles. Lake Manyara had tree climbing lions. In Ngorongoro Crater we saw huge herds of zebra, rhino and huge tuskers. Footmark Safaris toured us in a new Landcruiser with plenty of space and provided hot meals in the bush. He could identify an amazing number of bird species and it was a pleasure spending our week with him.

Unforgettable Zanzibar Experience Beautiful Beaches and Rich History,

My girlfriend and I visited Zanzibar for five days and we used Tanzania Footmark Safaris for sightseeing and accommodation. The experience was amazing. From airport pickup to drop off, including the tours themselves, everything went smoothly. We saw amazing marine life, met welcoming people and our guides were informative and willing to go the extra mile. Planning and booking were easy and straightforward. Zanzibar Tours & Travel Managing Director Seif responded to emails quickly and knowledgeably. We ultimately decided upon Karibu Inn, a budget accommodation. It was comfortable and well located at an afford price point. Our itinerary was:Stone Town tourPrison Island tourSafari Blue tourJozani ForestDolphin watching We found the Stone Town and Prison Island tours very informative, and the Red colobus monkeys who reside in Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park were lively and entertaining. Trip highlights were dolphin watching and the Safari Blue tour. We jumped in the water and were surrounded by pods of dolphins. Traveling by Dhow to various snorkeling locations around Zanzibar was a lot of fun, too. We had a fantastic time in Zanzibar, and Tanzania Footmark Safaris was a great host.

Amazing and magical adventure with Tanzania

We had amazing 3 days Safari Tour with Tanzania Footmark Safaris in Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara from Zanzibar. Aidan responded immediately and offered a reasonable price for a private tour. He organized everything only 2 days before the start of the safari (starting from hotel pick-up in Zanzibar, flights to Arusha and back to Zanzibar and safari itself (with 2 nights stay in a wonderful and cozy Eileen's Trees Inn lodge in Karatu). Our guide Dismas is very nice person and very educated, openminded and knowledgeable guide with eagle eyes. He cared about making sure we saw as much as possible and shared a lot of information. All 3 days were amazing - the views were stunning and the numbers of animals incredible. Many animals, including elephants, giraffes and even lions, came and could be observed right next to our jeep.Thank you, Tanzania Footmark Safaris for such wonderful and magical adventure! It was a pity that we chose only 3 days safari and we are already planning a return to Tanzania for another adventure with Tanzania Footmark Safaris visiting the Serengeti National Park.

This safari is one of the most amazing tours we have ever had, and I am pretty sure, one we will ever have. Our tour guide Thoby has over 17 years of experience in this industry, he is knowledgeable about the geology and almost every animal species in Tanzania. Under Thoby’s navigation we saw almost every animal and birds (and some bonus insects) in the 7 days. The Tanzania people are all very hospitable and welcomed us like families everywhere we went. What an incredible experience our 5-day Safari was! From the beginning of our booking, we were well taken care of. Jane in Moshi and Pearl in Toronto answered all our questions promptly. We arrived in Moshi and were greeted by a friendly driver to take us to the Springlands Hotel. Lovely accommodations! We set off on our adventure tour a few days later. Our driver/guide named Bonney was such a gentleman! He was very experienced and full of information about animal behavior. We were thrilled to see all the exotic animals in the wild. A highlight was watching a mother and baby cheetah! This was the time of the Great Migration so we were fortunate to see thousands of zebras and wildebeests and their babies. Our hotels on the Safari were 5-star and owned by Zara. The rooms were clean with mosquito nets, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the food and dining experience delightful!I highly recommend Tanzania Footmark Safaris for all your needs in Tanzania!
