Senior Friendly Safaris | Tanzania Safaris

Tanzania's wildlife is as good from a comfortable seat in a well-positioned 4×4 as it is for anyone else. The key difference for senior travellers is building the itinerary to minimise the rough road hours and maximise the time watching elephants at Tarangire or descending into the Ngorongoro Crater.

The single biggest improvement: fly between parks#

The most impactful change to make a Tanzania safari comfortable for older travellers is replacing the Ngorongoro-to-Serengeti road transfer with a bush flight. That transfer — roughly 3–4 hours on mixed paved and dirt road — is the single roughest leg on the entire northern circuit. A bush flight from the Ngorongoro area to Seronera takes under an hour and costs roughly $170–$180 per person on scheduled services. The difference in how the rest of the Serengeti visit feels is significant.

Flying between parks more broadly — see fly-in safaris for the full picture — opens up the southern circuit too. Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania's best wildlife destinations and, critically, has lower park fees ($35.40 per adult per day, against $82.60 for the Serengeti) and far fewer vehicles on the roads. The fly-in from Dar es Salaam to Ruaha takes around two hours. Combining Ruaha with Nyerere National Park as a fly-in circuit avoids all long road transfers entirely.

Northern circuit structure for senior travellers#

Tarangire is an excellent starting park. The drive from Arusha is mostly paved (roughly 2–2.5 hours) and the return is exceptional — enormous elephant herds and ancient baobab trees provide immediate reward without requiring multiple hours in the vehicle. Staying inside or close to the park avoids doubling back.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area suits senior travellers well. The crater descent is done entirely by vehicle, the floor is productive (Big Five in a compact 264 sq km space), and the rim lodges at roughly 2,200m have cool highland air and scenic farmland setting. Overnight at a Karatu lodge or on the rim itself, then fly to the Serengeti the following morning rather than driving.

In the Serengeti, Seronera (central) is the most accessible base — well-connected airstrip, close to the main game-viewing areas, no extreme internal transfers needed. Game drives depart at 6 AM and return by 10 AM, leaving the rest of the morning and full afternoon free for rest before the 3:30 PM evening drive.

Pace, duration and lodge comfort#

Senior-friendly itineraries typically run five to seven nights — enough time for Tarangire, Ngorongoro and two to three nights in the Serengeti without feeling rushed. Lodges at the mid-range tier and above include full-board (all meals, game drives), so there is no logistical friction around meals or activities. Private vehicles rather than group departures are standard, meaning game drive timing can flex by 30–60 minutes to suit the group.

For couples pairing a gentle-pace safari with a beach extension, the bush and beach safaris page covers the Zanzibar combination. Travellers who want the most comfortable lodge tier should also see multigen-family-safaris for the overlap in lodge specifications.

13 Tage Kilimanjaro Machame-Route + Safari mit Krater-Finale

13 days / 12 nightsenums.difficulty.moderate-hardmoderate pace

Frequently asked questions

How bumpy are Tanzania safari roads?
It varies significantly by park and by season. The main road from Arusha to Tarangire is mostly paved. Roads inside Tarangire and around Seronera in the Serengeti are manageable — graded dirt roads with corrugation, but not extreme. The Ngorongoro-to-Serengeti transfer (via Naabi Gate) and sections deep in the Serengeti can be rough, particularly after rains. Replacing the Ngorongoro-to-Serengeti leg with a bush flight removes the roughest single transfer on the northern circuit.
Are Tanzania safari lodges accessible for travellers with mobility limitations?
Most safari lodges are built in natural terrain with uneven paths between tents and main areas. Fully flat, paved lodge layouts are uncommon. Mid-range and luxury lodges generally have vehicle drop-off close to rooms, ramps or manageable steps, and staff who assist with luggage. True wheelchair accessibility requires advance research by property — a small number of lodges are specifically designed for it. Discuss your specific requirements with your operator at the enquiry stage.
What altitude is the Ngorongoro Crater rim?
The crater rim sits at approximately 2,200m. Some travellers, particularly those with heart or respiratory conditions, find the highland air takes a day to adjust to. The crater floor drops to around 1,800m. If altitude is a concern, discuss this with your doctor before the trip — most fit older travellers find the Ngorongoro rim comfortable within a day of arrival.
Is the Serengeti practical on a 5-day trip for older travellers?
Yes, if the Ngorongoro-to-Serengeti leg is flown rather than driven. A five-day structure might be: Day 1 Arusha–Tarangire drive, Day 2 full Tarangire game drive, Day 3 Ngorongoro crater descent, Day 4 fly to Seronera + afternoon drive, Day 5 morning Serengeti drive + fly to Arusha. That itinerary keeps road transfers short and still covers three of the northern circuit's best parks.
Can older travellers visit Ruaha or the southern circuit?
Ruaha is well suited to fly-in itineraries — there are no long road transfers if you fly from Dar es Salaam (around 2 hours). Ruaha's park roads are rough in places but the reward is exceptional: one of Africa's highest lion densities, Tanzania's largest elephant population, and very few other vehicles. The park closes March–May. Ruaha pairs naturally with Nyerere National Park (fly between) for a 6–7 night fly-in southern circuit.
